During the years just prior to the Sundering, the Empire was working on many projects. The greatest of these constructions was the Focusing. However, there was another project of significance. The Emperor had declared that his minions would build for him a means of traveling his entire empire with no effort. To accomplish this, several of the Alliance Mage Lords had been ordered to work on the construction of a network of teleportation portals (magically enchanted doorways that would teleport a person from one gate to another instantly.

The network consisted of a series of towers. Each tower held five portals. Each portal linked to a specific portal in another tower. Anything passing through a portal in one tower would emerge in the sister portal in the other tower. The amount of mass that could be transported in this fashion was limited to a certain weight per day as use depleted the energies of the portal and each portal recharged slowly. Each gate was operated with the use of an enchanted key. The keys for all five gates were held by a Portal Master who resided in the tower.

When the Sundering occurred, work on this project was abandoned. However, several of the gates were already operational and were used during the war. Since the war, these gates have fallen into disrepair and now lie buried in the ruins of ancient cities scattered about the eastern half of the Ithrian continent. The keys to these gates are long since lost.
